How Long Do Reed Diffusers Last?
A reed diffuser is one of the easiest ways to keep a room gently fragranced throughout the day. There is no flame to light and no switch to remember. Once the reeds are in place, fragrance is drawn up through them and released gradually into the air.
So how long does a reed diffuser actually last? The answer depends on the size of the bottle, the number of reeds, the room and where the diffuser is positioned. Our 125ml reed diffusers are designed to fragrance your home for up to around three months, although real-world lifespan will vary.
What affects how long a reed diffuser lasts?
Several everyday factors influence how quickly diffuser liquid evaporates.
- Room temperature: warmer rooms usually cause fragrance to evaporate more quickly.
- Air movement: draughts, open windows and busy doorways can increase evaporation.
- Number of reeds: more reeds generally produce a stronger scent but can use the liquid more quickly.
- How often you turn the reeds: turning them refreshes the scent throw but also increases the rate of evaporation.
- Room size: a large space may require more fragrance output than a small bathroom or hallway.
Where should you place a reed diffuser?
Position makes a noticeable difference. A diffuser benefits from gentle air circulation, but it should not sit directly beside a radiator, in strong sunlight or in a constant draught.
A stable surface in a hallway, living room, bedroom or bathroom usually works well. For more detailed placement advice, read our guide to where to place a reed diffuser.
How often should you turn diffuser reeds?
You do not need to turn the reeds every day. If the fragrance begins to feel less noticeable, carefully turning the reeds can refresh it. How often you do this depends on how strong you like the scent and how quickly you want to use the diffuser.
If you want the diffuser to last longer, turn the reeds less frequently. If you prefer a stronger burst of fragrance, turn them more often. Always protect the surface underneath when handling the reeds, as fragrance oil can mark some finishes.
Can you make a reed diffuser last longer?
Yes. A few simple habits can help:
- Keep it away from direct heat and strong sunlight.
- Avoid placing it immediately beside an open window.
- Turn the reeds only when the fragrance needs refreshing.
- Use the diffuser in a room that suits its size rather than trying to fragrance a very large open area with one small bottle.
- Keep the bottle upright on a level, protected surface.
Why does a new diffuser sometimes smell stronger at first?
When the reeds are first inserted, they begin absorbing the fragrance liquid. During the first few days the scent can feel particularly noticeable as the reeds become fully saturated. After that, the fragrance often settles into a steadier background presence.
This is normal and is one of the reasons it is worth giving a new diffuser a little time before deciding whether to add, remove or turn reeds.
Reed diffuser or candle?
The two formats create different experiences. A reed diffuser provides continuous background scent, while a candle gives fragrance when you choose to light it and adds the atmosphere of a flame.
If you are deciding between the two, our guide to candles versus reed diffusers explains where each works best.
Choosing your fragrance
Once you have chosen the right position, the fragrance itself becomes the enjoyable part. Our reed diffusers are made in small batches in our workshop on the West Coast of the Scottish Highlands and are available across fresh, floral, woody, aromatic and warmer fragrance families.
