What Does Bog Myrtle Smell Like? A Guide to This Scottish Fragrance
Bog myrtle is one of those fragrance names that immediately raises a question: what does it actually smell like? For anyone familiar with the Scottish landscape, the name also has a strong sense of place.
Our Bog Myrtle fragrance was created around the wild, earthy character of this Highland botanical. The result is aromatic and green, with sweet warmth and a mossy, natural depth rather than a conventional floral scent.
What is bog myrtle?
Bog myrtle, also known as sweet gale, is a fragrant shrub associated with wet heathland, moorland and boggy ground. It has a long connection with northern landscapes, including Scotland, where its aromatic leaves form part of the distinctive scent of wild peatland environments.
For us, that connection with the landscape is a natural fit. The Plant Workshop is based on the West Coast of the Scottish Highlands, so Bog Myrtle sits comfortably within a collection inspired by atmosphere, place and botanical fragrance.
What does bog myrtle smell like?
Bog myrtle has an aromatic, green and slightly resinous character. It can feel herbal and earthy, but it also carries a soft natural sweetness. In fragrance, those qualities work particularly well alongside mossy and woody notes.
Our interpretation is designed to feel wild and grounded rather than medicinal or sharply herbal. It combines the character of Scottish bog myrtle and sweet gale with earthy moss to create a fragrance that feels fresh, natural and quietly distinctive.
Is bog myrtle a strong fragrance?
It has presence, but it is not the same kind of intensity you would get from a very rich oud or heavily spiced amber fragrance. Bog Myrtle sits in our green and aromatic fragrance family, so the overall impression is more botanical and earthy.
That makes it a good choice if you enjoy fragrance that feels connected to the outdoors but still want enough warmth for a living space.
What fragrance family does bog myrtle belong to?
We place Bog Myrtle within our Green & Aromatic family. These fragrances tend to feature herbal, leafy, botanical or naturally fresh notes rather than obvious sweetness.
If you like fragrances that feel clean and outdoorsy but find citrus too bright or florals too soft, green and aromatic scents can be a useful middle ground.
How can you use Bog Myrtle at home?
Because the fragrance is earthy and botanical, it works particularly well in hallways, living rooms, studies and bathrooms. It can bring a fresh outdoor character into the home without smelling overly sharp.
- A Bog Myrtle Candle adds warmth and atmosphere when lit.
- A Bog Myrtle Reed Diffuser gives a more continuous background fragrance.
- A Bog Myrtle Fragrance Oil lets you choose when and how strongly to fragrance a room using a suitable burner or compatible device.
A fragrance with a sense of place
One of the things we enjoy most about Bog Myrtle is that it does not feel anonymous. The name, botanical character and fragrance profile all connect naturally with the landscape around our Scottish Highlands workshop.
That does not mean you need to know the plant to enjoy the scent. If you like earthy, green and aromatic home fragrance, Bog Myrtle stands very well on its own.
