How to Choose the Best Reed Diffuser for Your Home

A good reed diffuser should do more than simply smell pleasant in the bottle. The right diffuser should suit the room, the way you use the space and the type of fragrance you naturally enjoy living with.

If you are not sure where to begin, here is how we choose a reed diffuser for different rooms and fragrance preferences.

Start With the Room

The room you are scenting is one of the easiest ways to narrow down your choice.

Hallways and entrances suit reed diffusers particularly well because movement through the space helps carry fragrance. Fresh, green, aromatic and citrus fragrances can create a welcoming first impression.

Living rooms can take warmer and more characterful scents, including woody, amber and spiced fragrances.

Bedrooms often suit softer florals, woods and calming aromatic fragrances.

Bathrooms work beautifully with fresh citrus, herbal, green and clean floral fragrances.

Choose a Fragrance Family You Already Enjoy

If choosing from individual fragrance names feels overwhelming, start with a fragrance family.

  • Citrus & Fresh for bright, uplifting scents.
  • Floral for softer or more expressive flower-led fragrances.
  • Green & Aromatic for botanical, herbal and crisp scents.
  • Woods for deeper fragrances such as Oud, Vetiver and Santal.
  • Amber & Spice for warm, rich and comforting scents.

Think About How Strong You Want the Fragrance to Feel

Fragrance strength is not only determined by the diffuser itself. The fragrance blend, room size, airflow, temperature and number of reeds all influence how noticeable a diffuser feels.

Woody, amber and spiced fragrances can often feel richer and more enveloping, while citrus, green and aromatic fragrances can feel brighter and fresher.

If you prefer something with depth, try fragrances such as Oud or Tobacco & Vanilla.

For something cleaner and more aromatic, Vetiver is a good place to start.

Where Should You Put a Reed Diffuser?

Place your diffuser somewhere with gentle air movement, but avoid strong draughts, radiators and direct sunlight. Excess heat can make the liquid evaporate more quickly.

A sideboard, shelf, hallway console or bathroom surface can all work well, provided the diffuser is stable and protected from spills.

How Many Reeds Should You Use?

More reeds generally create stronger fragrance because more surface area is available to release scent into the room.

Our 125ml reed diffusers are supplied with eight reeds. You can use all eight for a fuller fragrance or start with fewer if you prefer something more subtle.

Should You Turn Reed Diffuser Reeds?

Turning the reeds can refresh the fragrance when it begins to feel less noticeable. You do not need to flip them constantly. Occasional turning is usually enough, and doing it too frequently can make the liquid evaporate faster.

Always take care when turning reeds and protect nearby surfaces from fragrance oil.

How Long Does a Reed Diffuser Last?

Our 125ml reed diffusers can last for up to around three months, although this varies with room temperature, airflow, placement and how often you turn the reeds.

A warm room or a position close to a radiator will usually use the fragrance more quickly than a cooler, more stable space.

Reed Diffuser or Candle?

Choose a reed diffuser when you want continuous background fragrance with very little attention. Choose a candle when you want fragrance together with the warmth and atmosphere of a flame.

Many people use both: a diffuser during the day, then a candle in the evening.
